Emily Bleeker broke my heart today and healed it all in the same hour.
I first heard of When I’m Gone while working on Characters Magazine, one of the magazines we’ve produced at Blvnp. It was one of the books where we interviewed the characters, and I knew from the reviews and the book description that it was a heartbreaking book. At that time I was knee deep in paranormal romances that I didn’t even give it a second glance, more so since I cry easily when I read romance books.
And then a few weeks back, with Emily Bleeker’s new release, I saw it on the top of the charts on Amazon again. At the time I was swirling in PMS hormones and didn’t think that my emotions were being punished enough.
Before diving into my review, here’s the book description from Amazon:
First let me say—I love you…I didn’t want to leave you…
Luke Richardson has returned home after burying Natalie, his beloved wife of sixteen years, ready to face the hard job of raising their three children alone. But there’s something he’s not prepared for—a blue envelope with his name scrawled across the front in Natalie’s handwriting, waiting for him on the floor of their suburban Michigan home.
The let inside, written on the first day of Natalie’s cancer treatment a year ago, turns out to be the first of many. Luke is convinced they’re genuine, but who is delivering them? As his obsession with the letters grows, Luke uncovers long-buried secrets that make him question everything he knew about his wife and their family. But the revelations also point the way toward a future where love goes on—in written words, in memories, and in the promises it’s never too late to keep.
As I read the book, I was immediately heartbroken to read about Luke’s loss over his wife, and the twists and turns with their kids and how they coped with the loss. And then when the first letter popped up, I honestly thought it was mostly going to be a series of her letters in the book, and not much story. Was I wrong.
Emily Bleeker wrote When I’m Gone storyline in such a way that you want to read the next page as fast as you can. A mystery, a lot of heartbreak and emotions running high filled the pages of her amazing book. With an ending that will leave you with so much hope that was an exact opposite of how the book started. Definitely a read for those who need a book who’ll leave them emotionally satisfied.
